It's difficult to pinpoint where the all started for me; I guess it starts with being a Black woman called 'Sarah Elizabeth Henry'.
I've always been interested in people, how their minds work and human behaviour. It started with watching documentaries and led all the way to a Psychology degree and counselling qualifications.
Then, a strange twist of fate meant that in June 2020 I was tutoring and in the wake of George Floyd's murder my next session was 'Difference and Diversity'. As a Black tutor, to majority White students I had to try and balance my racial vulnerability with my responsibilities and commitments as a tutor.
I scrapped the scheme of work and took a leap, thoroughly believing that the most important thing was to get these humans to connect with each other, with themselves and with me. I had no idea at the time, but that was when Let's Talk About Race training was born.
I have so many family memories and stories that make me so proud of my racial identity. I've been raised in an environment of resilience, inspiration and humour and Grandma and Grandad's house was the central hub for that. I remember hearing their stories and life-lessons and they all shaped who I am. Now I'm proud to carry on their legacy and inspire my own daughter to be proud of her identity and to love her skin.
My Grandma, the original S.Henry, is still a huge part of my inspiration today.
When I'm not at work you'll find me doing one of the following things:
At home with my daughter
My daughter is a teenager and I juggle being my many different professional roles with my most favourite title; mum.
Out in the garden
I'm a keen gardener, spending hours in the summer with my dahlias and my roses. Peonies are my favourite, and remind me of the hours I used to spend watching my grandma tend to hers.
Painting my nails
The brighter the better. Odd colours, matching colours, glitter. I love nail polish and I'm rarely seen not wearing any.
Drinking tea
On my own, while catching up with my friends, in the garden. My standard 'milk-no-sugar' Yorkshire Tea is where I get 98% of my daily hydration.
